Ready…Set….Go!! Need for Speed is back and better than ever in the newest addition to the franchise Need for Speed: Shift. Simulation, arcade, it covers all areas of racing. Although the questions still remain. Does Need for Speed push through its past ups and downs? Does it have what it takes to take try and take on Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3?

My answer is yes. Need for Speed: Shift captured the love of racing and built its way up. Slightly Mad definitely did their research when it came to the statistics and designs of the game. Not to mention the all new feature - the ability to re-create the driving experience with the cockpit view.

My downfall in Shift is the change. It took away from its initial franchise of the cops and robbers persona, and took a whole new route by concentrating on simulation. No cops, no story, it’s just you racing. Don’t get me wrong, Need for Speed: Shift is an awesome racing simulator, but many die-hard fans may be disappointed in the change.

Career mode racing has you work your way up in a variety of events from eliminator to drift to hot lap. Your events are your standard races and it’s up to you to beat the rest of the pack. Need for Speed: Shift incorporates a new reward system leveling up gamers in an RPG style that rewards you regardless of what your racing style is. This new feature also keeps track of driving performance by measuring your aggression and precision. Using those traits and habits you will earn points. Based on your driving style, it will match you up with racers who relate to your driving skills in matchmaking.

The graphics are amazing, and bring the game play to new levels. The cockpit mode looks outstanding, especially when you have a wreck. They even slow the game down to add bonus effect. The car noises are great and bring the game to life, while the announcer tends to repeat the same things throughout the game.

So if you want a great racing experience. Shut up and drive, because Need for Speed: Shift has what it takes to put you in the driver’s seat.

PROS: Realistic look and feel. Great reward system and new cockpit view.
CONS: No cops and robbers persona. Repetitive phrases from announcer. Matchmaking offers reward for spinning out opponents.

GRAPHICS: 4.5     SOUND:  3.5     CONTROL: 4.5      OVERALL FUN FACTOR: 4.0

NFS needs to go back to it's roots. Fast Furious arcadey balls tot he wall cops vs racer action.

I can see the online modes now where one team is the cops,a nd they've gotta chase down and arrest the racers.

i truly like straight up simulation games and racers dont really need a story to make them fun.

No game needs a story to make it fun. The gameplay is either fun or it's not. Story may enhance the game in some aspects, but it means nothing if the gameplay sucks.

Gameplay trumps everything else. A game with an awesome story and awesome graphics will still suck ass if it's got horrible gameplay where a game with a horrible story, and horrible graphics will always be a great game if it's gameplay is great.

Games with great gameplay can stand on their own, but games with great stories, and great graphics are nothing without great gameplay.
