The next big game to come from 2K Games is the fast-paced, stylish RPG-shooter Borderlands, where gamers will find themselves on the desert planet of Pandora in the middle of a creative and ever-changing story.

When I first got my hands on Borderlands, I was skeptical. What could this FPS-RPG really offer that hasn't already been done? Well, read on to see exactly what the game has to offer.

 7. The art style and graphics:  I am the type of gamer that doesn't judge a game much by its graphics; it's the gameplay and story that make a good title or not. It is impossible, however, to overlook the graphics -- or in this case, the artwork -- in Borderlands. The game combines a cel-shaded look with rendered graphics and hand-drawn textures to give it a very real and gritty style. This is definitely a bonus and one of the things that catches your attention right away.

6. Character selection: There are four different characters to choose from at the beginning of the game, each with his or her own strong points and special moves.
  • Mordecai the Hunter has several helpful skills, one of which gives a critical hit boost whenever he headshots an enemy attacking his allies, and others that may simply increase hit percentages for allies.
  • Roland the Soldier has several skills that not only help him but the other players as well such as, generating new ammo for both himself and those in his party, increasing experience gained by the party and increasing health regeneration.
  • Lilith the Siren's skills and powers include the ability to increase her allies' rate of fire and the creation of temporal bubbles that slow down enemies' rate of fire and projectiles, or speed up allies.
  • Brick the Berserker is the overall muscle of the group and has bolts strapped to his fists and boots for that extra maiming action.
5. Character customization: As you play the game and earn experience points, you will be able to customize and alter your character's skills and upgrades. Each skill within the skill tree you "purchase" unlocks more skills within that same category, allowing gamers to decide on their own personal deadly combinations. Each character has its own unique special move, however, which delivers devastating damage to any enemy caught in its path.

4. Enemy variety: Many RPGs have one huge flaw: Their lack of creative enemies gets rather repetitive and boring pretty quickly. This is not the case with Borderlands. The enemies range from low-level, over-sized rodents to S&M-gear-wearing psychos to over-powered steroid junkies and many other creative yet creepy foes.

3. Weapons: No game has ever had close to the same amount of weapon variations as in Borderlands. The game supports literally millions of different types of guns and weapons from different manufacturers, each with different attributes and specials. With this many options you would think things would get overwhelming, but the developers kept that in mind, and the weapons become available in a slow and controlled manner through mission rewards and vending machines. There is definitely a perfect weapon for every type of gamer.

2. Four-player co-op: Borderlands was made to be a co-op experience. Sure you can play single-player if you choose to, but in co-op is where this game shines. Borderlands supports two-player split screen for local co-op or four-player "drop in, drop out" co-op online. Many games are built as a single-player experience with co-op thrown in, but Borderland thrives on its intuitive and well-designed co-op style.

1. FPS-RPG gameplay: No game that I have ever played has fused two completely different worlds together as well as Borderlands has with the FPS game style mixed with RPG elements. This title appeals to both shooter fans and grinding-up pros equally. Borderlands combines the controls, gameplay style and overall feeling of an FPS with the inner core and heart of a true RPG seamlessly.

Oh, and did I mention that at any time during the game, a player can melee another player and start a 1-on-1 challenge if the other player returns the hit?  Also there are arenas set up around the world for free-for-all or group-based competitive play.

You must be boiling over with excitement now, aren't you? Who wouldn't be after reading about all the awesome things to look foward to in Borderlands, coming October 20th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC?!

Still need more convincing? Then check out this video, it's sure to get you hooked.
