If you're a fan of the DC Universe than I am sure you've heard of Sony Online Entertainment's newest MMO, DC Universe Online. If you're like me ( DC fanatic and MMO addict) than you've been following this game closely since its announcement. So for me, this title was a must see at E3. In fact, this was the first thing I had to see! Fans will agree that Jim Lee as the executive creative director and the mere thought of raiding the Batcave, sounds like the beginning of something great...
If you've gotten too caught up in this year's titles to pay attention to the details, DC Universe Online is an action MMO set in the DC Universe. Players will be able to fight along side their favorite villain or hero on various missions. At first glance, it reminds you of City of Heroes but with ten tons of awesome and of course, Batman! Need I say more? The game is still very much in progress but has a lot of potential. If they can pull off the interaction between PC and Playstation 3 players this game may be golden! At the SOE booth, they had both Playstation 3 and PC's set up for play. Seeing as how I have played my share of PC MMO's, I opted to tackle the PVP demo on the PS3. I was immediately relieved by the simplicity of the controls for the PS3 version because I could access my powers by holding down R2 and then choosing between: triangle, circle, x, and square. This was something I was really concerned with since I am used to having a keyboard. I chose to play one of the more difficult melee characters and jumped into the massive fight of PS3 players against the PC players. The gameplay on the PS3 seemed to work out pretty well as I got used to tossing large, blunt objects at my foes. Within seconds of playing I was instantly hooked and I was only battling other players. I was occasionally knocked back to a safe area because its the DC Universe and there are no deaths. Upon being knocked out you are given two choices. You can flee or rally but you are only given three chances to rally before you must flee. I played against other players until I had no choice but to flee but quickly got back into the fight after a short rest. Aspects such as these really kept the game true to the DC Universe which could easily make or break the game. When asked if the end result would for sure allow players on both the PS3 and PC to interact in game, they were still unsure. If ultimately this doesn't end up being a reality, I think the game can stand on it's own for PC and PS3. Obviously being able to play with PC users would be quite a feat but as long as I get cause havoc with some of the most notable DC villains, I will be fine. As I said before, this game is still a work in progress but so far it looks to be shaping into one addictive MMO. Unfortunately, there is still no release date so we can probably kiss 2009 goodbye and hope for sometime early in 2010.
