Straight from Iwata's keynote at this year's GDC, Nintendo annouces a brand new Zelda game for the DS. Entitled "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks". More screens and info after the jump!

This new DS title is tentatively named The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. It will be available this year. Stated in the keynote, Link will have the ability to control enemies and make them fight for him. In the demo, Link distracted a big Zora with a controlled shadow guard, then snuck around to hit it from behind. The stylus will also come into play. Much like in Phantom Hourglass, Link will have to travel between areas using a train armed with cannons.

Iwata stressed that Nintendo is trying to satisfy longtime loyalists with a less "casual" game.

New Zelda looks great to all those fans who loved the Windwaker style. Although some are torn on the new direction the series took. Spirit Tracks still looks like another quality Zelda title with spectacular gameplay.

I think it goes without saying that I am PSYCHED for this game. I'm pretty sure I woke up my roommates when they announced this on one of the live blogs. Looking at the few screenshots available, I'm curious about when this game will take place (especially with no Great Sea in sight). That gigantic beetle looks like an interesting boss, and I have no idea what item that is in the second screenshot. I hope Nintendo releases that trailer soon!!

Okay, I've seen (and downloaded) the trailer now (which you can find at 1up, ign, and gametrailers). The item I mentioned before appears to be a cross between a pinwheel and a gun, as it can shoot small whirlwinds in a straight line away from Link. It's ability to pick up items and carry them through the air reminds me of the Gale Boomerang from Twilight Princess, but without the ability to return items to Link.

I'm not sure how much we'll be able to explore Hyrule if the main method of transport is by train, but I'm optimistic!

The last Zelda game I played was Ocarina of time!!!!

Errrr, I think I should try again :D

People actually think this game looks good?! Wind Waker was horrible and this game looks just like it. How bout putting out another Zelda like OoT or Twilight Princess.

so... find sword, find shield, travel, clear some dungeons, find a boomerang/other miscellaneous items, defeat gannon, save princess. blah blah.

I'll pass. Nintendo makes me sad these days.

obviously its a different game, but we all know how it ends. everything nintendo seems to make these days is either new and terrible(wii music cough cough) or a visually updated zelda/mario/metroid/etc. with a slightly different story and the same ending.

Dude they should make a Zelda where you play as Gannon and kill Link. I would play that.
