Statistics are changing. Gamers can be male or female, young or old. Gaming has become very popular over the years, and the gaps have changed significantly over the years.  But with so many new gamers joining the ranks all the time statistics only stay accurate for so long. It used to be a very male dominated industry, but over the years it has changed considerably. Although there are still more males who partake in gaming, the gap between male and female has drastically declined. Many statistics about gamers go un-noticed. Well here’s to those statistics in the Top 7 Statistics about Gamers that you may not know.

7.    Adult gamers have been playing an average of 12 years. Among most frequent gamers, adult males average 10 years for game playing, females 8 years. Thirty-eight percent of game players are women.

6.    Thirty percent of most frequent computer game players are under eighteen years old. Twenty-six percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old. Forty-four percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old.

5.    Forty percent of most frequent console
game players are under eighteen years old. Thirty-five percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old. Twenty-five percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old.

4.    Thirty-eight percent of game players
are women, while forty-two percent of online gamers are women. Females age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (23%).

3.    The average adult woman plays games 7.4 hours per week.  The average adult man plays 7.6 hours per week. Though males spend more time playing than do females, the gender/time gap has narrowed significantly.  Whereas in 2003, males spent an average of 18 more minutes a day playing games than did their female counterparts, in 2004 they spent only six minutes more each day doing so.  Females spend an average of two hours more per week playing games now than they did a year ago.

2.    Fifty percent of gamers are regularly involved in creative activities, such as painting, writing, or playing an instrument. In addition, adult gamers exhibit a high level of interest in current events, with 94 percent following news and current events and 78 percent reporting that they vote in most of the elections for which they are eligible.

1.    Ninety-three percent of game players also report reading books or daily newspapers on a regular basis, while sixty-two percent consistently attend cultural events, such as concerts, museums, or the theater.

So here’s to the gamers - the literate and creative. You can’t beat statistics. They show that gamers are not rejects. They are not unintelligent. And in fact, some tend to be more involved than the average person. So the next time someone says “All you do is play video games.” Check the facts, gamers are more aware of what’s going on around them than most.

I love that GameGirl picture with the quote "Because nothing is more appealing to a guy than a girl who can kick his butt!" I love you girls.

Actually I know a good amount on statistics. Funny how you are stating that people must be fat, or can't get a real job when you are most likely basing your opinion on statistics or just who you have met. I have met tons of gamers over the years, and the majority of them are not fat, are not hideous looking, and they do have "real" jobs.

I also find it funny that you say retail is not a real job, because the majority of jobs in the U.S. are in retail. (Grocery, Sales, Gas Stations, Fast Food, etc.). Whatever your position in the company, even CEO is considered retail because they sell items to consumers and work for that company. So to say it's not a "real" job, means a good chunk of the U.S. workforce does not have a "real" job.

Hi Ladyluck,
Thanks for all your work on Game Girl. Could you please provide a source for these statistics.
Thanks again,

@ DOPE
Thanks. But for you question, I first received the info during a lecture for class on video game demographics. But the information is also on a highly respected site - the ESA or the Entertainment Software Association website. Members include Capcom, Atari, Nintendo, and many, many more.
But here is a link to it.

Ladyluck,
THANK YOU. I just got back from visiting the site and found a summary of the survey. Really interesting stuff. Again, thanks for the link and for your work on Game Girl.

I guess that survey is in that 93%... but then the percentage wouldn't be true... or is it???? haha
