Now that Resident Evil 5 has finally been released, issues of racism are being brought back up.  The issue came about based on the games setting and objectives. As most Resident Evil fans know, Resident Evil is all about killing zombies. However, this time around, you are a white male running around and killing a location filled with black zombies, people have depicted it as racist.  Even N’Gai Croal, an ex-Newsweek editor, was quoted saying “No one black worked on this game”.

I think the whole issue is stupid. They had no intention of making the game racist. It was created in a new location, to try and inspire not only a new crowd, but to bring Resident Evil fans to a new location. The game never puts that the African part of the zombies is the reason for the violent nature, in fact they suggest that it is the zombie part that has instilled this violence.

Is the game racist? Not in my opinion. But that is what it comes down to, people’s opinions. Whether or not they feel it is or isn’t. But I’m not the only one who feels there isn’t an issue, many reviews and ratings groups have said they feel there is not a racism issue. Most likely it will always have controversy attached to it, as there tends to be those who will not let the issue go. But the game is fun, and has received very high reviews. Plus it all comes down to the gamer, because it is their decision on whether to spend their money on it.

Racism becomes and issue when you make it an issue. You don't see a zombie with a huge-fro drinking malt liquor while rapping, while Chris drags off a girl while dressed in a white robe. Zombies have no ethnicity. He's killing them because their zombies, not because they're black.

Capcom should handle this by simply stating, There is no racism implied or otherwise.

N'Gai Croal is a game writer I highly respect, and I don't think he meant that he was offended by the game. I've played the demo, you're shooting an equal amount of people from other races. There are Indians and Spanish people in there. Why didn't anyone complain when RE4 was set in Spain and the white male Leon was shooting up the Los Ganados?

It's not racist, it just happens to be set in African. It's just people looking for something to complain about. Look at the female lead! She's a super hot Kenyan! Do you think the game devs would put her in there if they were racist? I think not.

Great points, and to counter those that say the only reason Sheva is black to counter the racist idea, Well I have a shocker for you. There are black people in Africa and who better to assist Chris through African, than local?

I think it would be more racist to not include black zombies and still say it's in Africa. Out of all the continents I personally think Africa is the most mysterious.

I am black and I didn't find anything racist about the game. It was just set in Africa like RE4 was set in Spain. But unfortunately, there will be some people who find racism in everything and call attention away from things that really are racist.

On a side note, it has been a long time since I posted on here nice layout.

@sxpacks - Awesome points. I could not have said it myself.

@Aegis - Welcome back! Was wondering where you had gone! Thanks, glad you like the layout. :)

@HolidayBrick - Yep, that's exactly what it is, "forced controversy". I seriously wonder if anyone who is yelling racism about this game has actually played it.

Spooty_the_Gameguru

The progenitor was discovered in Africa, so the story had to eventually go back to the source, it seems. N'Gai asked those questions in particular in the past and brought all of this to attention of the media & game industry. Believe me, if this game was insinuating racism, it wouldn't be on the shelves. But, everybody has to bitch about something, that's the number one rule!
