Long long ago the boyfriend gave me a heads up about a game called Sadness, which was supposedly "the trippiest game" he had ever heard of, so I had to check it out.  What I found was a spooky psychological-thriller game in the baby stages of development. I thought "huh, that looks cool" , and never thought about it again, until recently.  My curious mind  led me to track down the latest and of course most important news relating to this highly anticipated game, so click on the jump to find out what I learned!

Sadness is being devloped by the polish videogame company Nibris.  It has been hailed as the first truly adult horror game for the wii, and quite frankly, it looks pretty damn scary to me.  The bits and pieces i found long ago when i first heard of the game consisted of a few articles and a couple art concepts.  Even then it seemed like the game was filled with the stuff of nightmares.  Nibris has chosen Gamebryo as the engine to power the game, and heres what they had to say:

"Without a doubt, Gamebryo is the most powerfult engine available for the wii.  After getting familiar with the engine several months ago we made the decision to choose Gamebryo.  Since then, our team has been working on Sadness and we are quite impressed...We will have quite a few graphical effects in our game, which some believe are impossible to attain on the Wii.  Gamebryo helped make it possible.  We are firmly convinced we made the right choice."

A key nuance to Sadness is it's graphical presentation, the game will be completely in black and white, and there will be no in game HUD or menu.  Nibris has managed to create a game that truly takes advantage of the wii's wiimote and nunchuk by using these controllers as the players hand.  Game designer Piotr Bielatowicz has said,

"We are aiming at completely intuitive behaviour of the player-just as in life.  Every choice a player makes is essential - if you experience traumatic events in your life, they are with you all the time.  This will be the same in Sadness.  We want the player to feel that he is participating in events, not merely playing a game."

That being said, Nibris has taken every measure possible to make this victorian-era thriller an extremely immersive game.  They've even brought in horror authors and psychologists to make the game as ridiculously scary as possible.  According to the Nibris website, the storyline of the game centers around a woman named Maria who is trying to protect her son Alex from monsters, the game is set in the victorian era in ruins in the woods of the Russian Empire.  "The study of fear and the borders of human imagination.. A trip to the darkest corners of consciousness, in all of us... A trip to the hell of the subconscious and not necessarily to return..." Nibris pretty much sums up the game in that opening sentence.

I'm pretty stoked for this game even though it doesnt really have a solid release date, I saw some speculations about fall of this year, and another site said new years eve of this year, either way I dont mind waiting, it seems like it will be a really cool game, and it kind of reminds me of that Stay Alive movie.  I'll admit I'm not much of a horror flick fan, aaaand I'm afraid of the dark unfortunately, but I'm more than willing to overcome my fears to play this awesome game, I'll just have to make sure I keep the lights on.  :)

Yo J, isn't The Nintendo Wii made for mostly families? So do you even think that this game will do well considering most of its fan base is that of 5-13 year olds albeit it has amazing graphics?

Janessa

well "E" haha, i actually do think this game will do well mainly because it IS one of the big games for the wii that is mainly geared towards an adult audience, I am confident that the Gamebryo engine will be able to do a hell of a job showing off the wii's capabilities. Yes the wii has been pegged as the "family console", but i think Nibris chose the system for their game because they felt that it was the only console capable of delivering the full experience that they wanted to convey in Sadness. Anyhoo, hope this answered your question Eric, and you really are the best counterstrike player i know. :)

its really far from bn the "trippiest" game (Rez, locoroco, patapon, Every Extend Ever are up there), but it definitely looks creepy unlike next gen crapfest/ sellout RE5.

iv actually been looking 4ward to info in this game and Madworld for quite a while. the fact that gamepro called wii sports resort "1 of the most anticipated wii titles of 09" made me REALLY upset and made me cringe.

tho this has absolutely no relevance to ur article, im gonna post it anyway b/c im listening to it and it makes me laugh when i feel upset (which is often after i leave calc)

im gonna hit jess up w/ this so DONT......TELL......K!!!!!?????? ^___^

Janessa

The Wii NEEDS some games that appeal to adults in order to get more sales. Most people who have Wii's got them for
a) Their children/children in general
b) Super Smash Bros Brawl
c) Resident Evil

I think this game looks really sweet, but I'm pretty frightened too ._.;; Dead Space gave me two full sleepless nights. And it doesn't even that that 'SCARY' effect. Just all the jumping out and darkness freaked me out. I'm a huge pansy when it comes to horror games. But this looks really awesome. I'll definitely look into it ^_^
Janessa, message me on aim or whatever when you figure out the release date for this. I'm curious to know :]
