CES 2009 was the place to be this past weekend. Technology was at the center of attention during the show and the future of gaming was certainly not ignored. A company that took their representation at the convention very seriously was EA. One of the games that they were extremely excited to demo for us Game Girls was The Sims 3.

The Sims 3 will be one of many Sims games and expansions for the PC. The sequel to the widely popular Sims 2 is set to be released on February 20th of this year on the PC. A release date for a Mac version has not been announced yet.

There were several aspects of the demo that stood out to me more than anything else. The first was that going between houses, neighborhoods, and stores would not require any loading screens. Anyone who devoted as much time as I did to The Sims 2 knows that going to the market would always take a five plus minute load time. Now that traveling between locations is seamless there will be no reason to stay in your house all day.

Customization is definitely going to be a staple of The Sims 3. During the "Create a Sim" demo we saw that there was no limit to the amount of customization allowed. One coat could be split up into numerous parts, all of which can be individually patterned and colored. Tweaking the details of your Sims body has never been easier either. My favorite option was the addition of long hair. When I make a Sim, or a Mii/XBL avatar even, I look for any way I can make the avatar look like me, so the abundance of options is certainly appreciated. Also, all of your creations can be uploaded to the internet and be shared with TheSims3.com community.

The final aspect of game play that completely solidified my purchase of this game was that they upgraded the AI of the characters. The point of the game is no longer to feed them and bathe them but rather make them happy. If left alone your Sim is going to take care of itself completely, your main focus is to complete tasks to make your Sim feel fulfilled emotionally. In the Sims 2 I spent far too many hours repeatedly forcing my Sim to eat Chili con Carne for the hunger bar and then play video games for the fun bar, only to have them pee themselves and then have to force them to take a shower. It's going to be refreshing to play as God rather than Babysitter.

Overall, I am definitely anticipating the arrival of this game. I am fully prepared to sacrifice my IRL social life for my Sims social life. Is anyone else going to be getting this game too?

Thank god you don't have to feed it anymore. I couldn't fully enjoy the previous sims because of that. I might seriously consider this one...

Played 1 a long time ago and then some of the console versions. Never bothered with 2 for unknown reasons. But 3 seems like it could put some breath into the franchise that once captivated millions.

But the real question is: Will I be "ganked" if I play online?

I'm over Sims personally my dreams of becoming a adult getting a job and all that other Sims if may say so crap of living a capitalist reality are over now all i want to do is get away from it eventually. So basically Sims has lost the core appeal for me but i guess it might still be there for some but personally i would rather eat my own face then play Sims again.

i want games that take me away from my everyday routine and provide some sorta adventure, entertainment, fantasy etc etc.

but at lass tis is only my opinion.

I'm definitely going to look into getting it. I enjoyed the first two games, but would only play them for a few days at a time because the monotony of routine (eat, shower, workout, job, come home, maybe socialize on your day off) was WAY too reflective of my own life :)

Now that it sounds like you no longer have to feed them, etc, this could be way more fun.

Well this is not a buy for me. The reason I play the sims is to be sedistic. I want them to pee themselves and not be able to get out of the pool if I take away the ladder. Now I am going to have to watch and hope they drown in the pool or get sick because they are stupid. Oh well, my friends tell me I play the game incorrectly anyway. But how can something so wrong feel so right?

And nobody finds this the least bit sexist?

maybe EA was just extremely excited to see A girl at their booth let alone a pack of them lol anyway that aside it's not really that sexiest nor would i think it sexist at first but on a scale of 1-10 it would be fairly low on that scale. but then again I'm not girl and i don't see the GG's complain so...

@MasterFang
I would think it wa sexist if they had asumed that the girls played no other games but the sims. Being excited to show your prime demographic (The Sims used to be the number one most selling game of all time and over 50% of players were female a much higher percentage than any other successful EA game) a game because if they don't like it then well you have problems. I would also find it sexist if they redesinged The Sims to be more girly but they didn't. I have never found The Sims to be directly made for women but women often play it. If of course they said "hey your a girl so you must only play The Sims" then I would be mad. This is no different than hairdryer commercials, some guys use hairdryers but I rarely see one in a comerical for hairdryers. Then again I could see how that could be considered sexist ... I guess it depends to me on how they are protraying the people using the hair dryers as much as how they respond to the women gamers.
