More after the jump.
In the 10 weeks before Christmas their sales sky-rocketed 130%. These sound like impressive numbers but their total number of units sold in North America is 2.56 million. That doesn't really match up to Microsoft's numbers-- a stunning 8 million more then the PS3, according to an article from The Escapist. Sony's increase in sales is suspected to be the result of the release of the new 160GB bundled system selling at $499. However, the Xbox 360 still has a long, long way to go to reach the 100 million PS2s sold-- still 2008's most played system.
Who will win this battle? Only time will tell. But what about that other systems numbers? The Wii. Dun dun dun.
While the Wii is a system hardcore gamers like to bash, it's numbers are still blowing all other competition out of the water. The numbers for this years total Wii sales are yet to be released but last years sales still leave Nintendo towering over the rest. The Nintendo DS alone last year doubled this years PS3 sales at 5.3 million. In the month of December of 2007, 1.3 million Wii's were sold. Nintendo sold 1.5 million Wii controllers alone! These numbers are staggering compared to those of the Xbox360 and the PS3. Why are people going so crazy for this system? Casual gaming is in, and the Wii system is entirely targeted towards casual gaming. Despite the fact that one out of four Wii games received an average review rating of 4 out of 10 or less, the Wii powers on with no regard for the competition. That's not to say however that the Wii doesn't have it's fair share of excellent games. Nintendo produces roughly 1.4 million Wii's a month, and they sell nearly every unit they produce. Whether it is their marketing strategy, their target demographic, or their new interface, the Wii is the king of consoles still.
