Gears of War is known for being an amazing third person shooter, but not so much is known about the storyline of the game, other than the fact that you have to fight the locusts, an insect like army that emerged from the ground on E-Day. The first couple issues of the Gears of War comics dropped recently, so of course I had to pick them up, more after the jump! gears issue one cover

The first issue opens with a series of panels that compare the locusts to the boogeymen of our childhood stories, illustrating a few drones kidnapping a child while another kid escapes and hides. The setting switches to the middle of a locust swarm attacking a couple of Gears. The rest of the comic consists of more fighting and an ending where a few boomers come into play, nothing too spectacular. The second issue wasn't any less disappointing, taking place after the death of a squad member, it attempts to bring together a storyline filled with even more things that you would already know if you played the game.

So first of all, I don't usually pick up videogame based comics, but since this one was gears of war and it was backed by DC comics I just had to give it a spin. Unfortunately I found the comics to be pretty disappointing, they lack any real storyline and ninety percent of the comics consisted of watching Marcus chainsaw drones frame by frame. I was actually hoping that it would be able to deliver some more detail and unknown facts about the game's story, which is usually used to no more than deliver the game play. Although I must say, the artwork was pretty nice, the panels were very detailed, but that's about the only good thing that I saw about the comics, worth picking up the third issue? I don't think so, sorry!

That's a shame it was disappointing =/ The art looks consistent, though. Seems they payed more attention to the art than the storyline! What makes a great comic or even manga, in my eyes, is consistent art (which I'm also picky on) and a storyline that keeps you reeled in. Sorry this one didn't do that =/
Perhaps they'll create a more in-depth story throughout the others. I've read where the first couple books are no good, but end up leading into a great story. Might wanna keep a look out on other people's reviews :3

Comics based on games, some of them are cool and some of them are bad, i want to try this ones because i liked Gears a lot, is always good to hear diferent opinions.
I really liked the Silent hill comics.

I thought the storyline of the games was disappointing... "not so much is known" because not so much is there.

the graphics were great, the weapons were inventive, but the storyline was ludicrous (even for a sci-fi game) and the characters were shallow.

"Gears of War is known for being an amazing first person shooter"

small mistake in your article, third person btw lol anyway sucks that they didn't do anything with the story. halo books were good as they went into the story and further i might add.

Ninja_of_Sound

this comic isnt that great compared to other comics that are released consistently by marvel, dc, image, and other comic book companies. but for a fan of the game its a good comic to check out.

I got an issue of the comic when I purchased the game, and I thought it was good. I always liked how Gears had a minimal story and just kind of set the stage for a COG v. Locust gorefest. I mean, that's what wars boil down to for soldiers anyway; a rally around the flag 'us vs. them' mentality. I'd rather just get my orders and go blow something (or someone:) up. I liked when the backstory was vague in Gears 1 (and slightly less so in Gears 2) as it focuses on the action and leaves more to the imagination.

In my opinion, the more the story expands in these games, the more lame the plots become (see Halo 2 and 3). I LOLed at the COG commander's melodramatic inspirational speech at the beginning of Gears 2 as it reminded me of the President's melodramatic inspirational speech in Independence Day. Just stick to the gore and explosions Cliffy. I did like the Maria sidestory though.
