Personal Trainer: Cooking is a game that was just released for the Nintendo DS. Now wait! Before you turn away going "psssh, not another Cooking Mama" I suggest you take another look at what could be your window into the wonderful world of food. This game requires no previous experience in the kitchen and encourages everyone to get cooking. Shall we?

Haven't you sat down and said.. "Hm.. I could really go for a taco right now.." or "Jee willakers.. I want some pasta" without the faintest idea how to make it? Having no previous experience in cooking, and not even knowing where your nearest food store is, Personal Cooking: Trainer can give you the motivation you need to look in your cupboards, hop in the car, and get started.
For those seasoned chefs, fear not, each recipe has a difficulty level, so you can challenge your mastery of the ovens.

The first step in this game is selecting what you want to eat, which can be done by looking at the world map. All you have to do is pick the native country of the food you want and voila! A whole list of dishes from that country with their cooking time, difficulty level, ingredients, and even calorie count. Brilliant? I know.

The next step is heading over to your local grocery store with your list of ingredients generated by the game. Cooking for more then 4? No problem, the game has a built in feature to adjust serving size. In this part of the process you can even go over the steps needed to prepare it, use the calculator to determine cost of ingredients, and really decide if this is the meal for you.

Finally, you get to cook. The game will take you step by step through the cooking process with spoken instruction as well as written. Now the coolest part?? You can give commands to your cooking mentor if your hands are covered in food. Just say aloud "continue", "repeat" or even "more details" if you are stuck. My favorite feature? The timer, which can be conveniently activated by saying "start timer", and knows how long to time your food for, with a cute little alarm when finished.

Last step is eating your wonderful creation. Oh, and when you are done don't forget to stamp your cooking calender so you can remember when you cooked those awesome tacos, or that lasagna that everyone loved.

So there you have it, a fun easy way to start cooking without ever having tried it before, and grow as a chef like you never imagined you could. The game has limitless possibilities, from making your own pizza crust to learning how to use odd utensils such as a Ramekin. The rest is up to you and your cooking trainer. Bon appetit!

It's actually an interesting idea just place your DS in your kitchen and start cooking. Cooking games i think will be better than recipe books and movies/ shows etc because you flow at your own pace. we need Gordan Ramsay voice acting cooking recipes though add some spice to do it lol.

Cooking Games for the win i say as long as they are good of course.

Imagine this on PSP or PC, hardcore gamers cooking 1337 cooking 101

Scarecrow_Zero

This could be good for me since all i know how to cook is Maruchan instant soup (just boil water, put in the cup and serve hot- 2 minutes). this could also be used by my maid since she sucks at cooking.
The only con of this is that might cook something really good that i might literally eat my DS. Im kiding, just out of curiosity i might give it a try, i always like to experince on new things, i will keep on eye on this :)

Wow, I totally looked at this game and turned my head the other way, but I'm considering getting it now!! Haha, great post Jess <3

this is a good idea. it will help younger kids perhaps take up an interest in cooking. i didnt take an interest in cooking until i was 16 and i kind of wish i picked it up earlier. i enjoy cooking now it is very relaxing and challenging at times. at one point i was going to go to culinary school but i decided not to. maybe this game will help inspire the next iron chef.

its good for kids.. but i doubt hardcore gamers would even take a glance at this. Reason why I hate nintendo, they just drop their real fans for the quick buck ones.

@Rini - I thought the same thing. It's nice to hear there are different difficulty levels -- it was one of my main concerns.

I'd like to know if there's a variety of recipes, though. If it's just dishes like basic lasagna, I don't know if I'd spring for it.

Zumbikilla

When I read the title of the post i thought it was another Cooking mama XDDD but this looks really interesting, i'd like to see it on action.

Great article Jess!

imagine if they did Kama Sutra for the Nintendo DS lol or how to use a computer the amount of possibilities they have to market to the casual market or the not so casual.(srry random thought i thought to share)

Jess

@Aquarius12385 - Supposedly there are 245+ recipes.. but honestly I feel the same way, that there needs to be weirder choices.. regardless I have no idea how to make lasagna as cliche as it is. lol
