Nintendo made a lot of announcements this week (For the Wii news check out Nikoles article) and have finally confirmed rumors about a new system, it has been called the DSi. This new system is set to release in Japan on November 1st. But lets get into the more technical stuff, what can this bad boy do that the NDS can't?

Lets start with Specs.

Screen Size: Two 3.25-inch displays
Screen Resolution: 256 x 192
CPU Speed/type: One 67 MHz (ARM) and one 33 MHz ARM7TDMI
Form Factor: 5.85 x 3.33 x 0.99 inches
Camera: 2 cameras, one with VGA resolution
Memory: SD slot, internal storage (unknown size)
Internet: Wi-Fi
Browser: Yes
Online Store: Yes (DSi Shop)
Touch Screen: Yes (single touch)

System Size: 12% thinner than DS Lite

DSi and DS comparison

As you can tell by the specs they have updated the DSi with some pretty cool additions including two cameras, one is on the outside and one is conveniently tucked away right where the microphone is currently on the NDS. Nintendo also announced that they will be launching the "DSi Shop" so they can sell content directly over Wi-Fi with prices also connected to the Nintendo Points (Wii Points), so the prices range from 0 - 800 points. One of the cool things they have included with the system is that it will be bundled with a 1000 Nintendo point card until March of 2010. Only thing about this new system is that it will be getting rid of the GBA Slot entirely.
Nintendo has called the DSi a "third platform" so as to imply that it will not be competing directly with the NDS, how thats possible I don't know. The colors that it will launching with are Black and White and it will cost 189,000 (approx. US $178) and launches Nov 1st in Japan. There has been no release date set for it in the US or Europe yet.

There have also been a few new games announced for the DS/DSi including:

Wagamama Fashion Girls' Mode: Another Fashion Game..thanks Nintendo!
Aruite Wakaru Seikatsu Rhythm Game: the fitness game featuring a pedometer attachment.
Sekai no Gohan Shaberu! DS O-Ryouri Navi: sequel to Cooking Guide with recipes from around the world.
"Taboo: The Sith Sense 2k9": some kind of fortune telling game involving tarot and palm reading.
Tomodachi Collection: Game that lets you interact with Miis.
Made in Wario/Wario ware: Wario's name doesn't appear in the tenative title but it is clearly a sort of "Made in Series" featuring Wario.
3D Picross
Mario & Luigi RPG 3: nuff said.

So it seems that Nintendo kept all of its major news away from E3 and strictly for TGS. Nintendo you have redeemed yourself.

thats pretty cool they made it a little bigger and added the cameras. but no gba slot. i still got some gba games i still like to play.

Zumbikilla

I don`t have DS or PSP yet, but since both systems are getting new versions, it's difficult to make a choice... :S

Scarecrow_Zero

sounds, feels and looks cool, thank god for technology.
Is it just me or any of you think that sega should resurrect the Game gear, i still have and play mine and is grrrrreat (like tony the tiger would say)

BobaFettucini

my phone has a camera. so does my camera. my ds does not need a camera. nor does it need a price tag higher than the psp.

This is actually odd because Nintendo has the habit of staying away from TGS and embracing E3. Although I suppose they save their info for the fans, and not the media.

But honestly... is this even a new system? I'm not familiar with the Specs of the old DS, but is the graphics processor better? Or is this merely a Gameboy color, as opposed to an advance.

"Taboo: The Sith Sense 2k9"
Hmm...for some reason it sounds like a Star Wars fortune telling game ;P haha, jk

I already have a regular DS, but this might be worth buying (I have the original DS from when it came out). Time to switch? Or get a PSP instead? Decisions, decisions...

HolidayBrick

and you thought it printed money before!

I'm kinda sad about the removal of the GBA slot... it made it so I could play all my games, and then whenever I felt like being silly, I could pop in a ds title.

Nintendo DS News - From TGS

O_O

This just shows how much journalist girls know about gaming indusry.

In case you don't know what I am talking about, I am telling you.

This event called Nintendo Media Summit not Tokyo Game Show, I am amazed how, not just you, but other girls also thought that these news came from TGS.

Traditionally Nintendo does not participate in the Tokyo Game Show, and they haven't announced whether they will participate this year or not, but they will most likely not gonna be there again since TGS is one week away.
