PC fans will not be experiencing Gears of War 2 this November, or ever in fact. The project for the PC version was cut, as explains Mark Rein, Epic Games VP. However, Rein makes it clear this decision was not based on the previously speculated concerns of piracy:

"The reason we decided not to develop Gears 2 for PC was so that we could focus our resources on making Gears 2 the best possible Xbox 360 game it could be rather than splitting them across multiple platforms like we did with the first one. I think Gears 2 will be a better game for it and that this was the right decision.

Even though People Can Fly worked on Gears PC (mostly doing the new multiplayer content and some of the porting chores) it still required significant effort from several folks on the Epic side. That effort took resources away from some of the post-ship support for Gears on 360. On Gears 2 we decided 100% of the effort was going to go to the one console version. I believe that concentration of effort has made Gears 2 an even better game than the original. The reaction we've seen this week from the press who got to play a little bit of the game appears to be confirming that. In addition PCF is now working on their own kickass game, to be published by EA, which is being designed from the start for both PC and console as opposed to Gears which was designed for console and then ported to PC.

Is piracy a problem with PC gaming? Sure, but that has nothing to do with this situation. This was simply about how we could best maximize the use of our limited resources."

Personally, I don't hold alot of hope for the game in general, but removing the ability for the PC fanbase to play the game on their method of choice is only further sealing the coffin on PC gaming.

this is somewhat unrelated, but because of the piracy issue I feel that it works out...

software companies are so GOD DAMN paranoid. I'm only allowed to write music when I have a free usb port because of a stupid dongle. problem is I regularly use all six ports 6 ports (without the dongle) 2 on my keyboard and 4 on my case, so I had to buy a $20 usb hub just so I could use a dongle.

it almost makes me want to steal software from a store with a chainsaw bayonet while frag-tagging adobe CEOs for overcharging on CS4 ($2500).

Naive its time to get a xbox360 emulator for the PC or get xbox360? well either way PC will always be the best console for it raw power possibilities.

I agree with you navie PC gaming is dieing. The only way for the PC to come back as the gaming king once again is to inovate. Every PC only game has been one of four games that haven't changed for the last 4 years. I have played C&C, I have played the sims, I have played first person shooters. The only game any different is Spore and thats doing great. The PC was the original inovator and if anyone is going to make money on the PC it has to be again!

That sucks for the PC people who were looking forward to Gears 2. Still, I have to imagine that the vast majority of Gears fans are 360 owners. On a related note, I see you can get an RC Centaur tank at Best Buy when you reserve the game. I'm sold. Only 1 more month :)

Ninja_of_Sound

that sucks for pc gamers but im not one of them so it doesnt really affect me.

sonyboy69

im not buying this. i think this just means they will put the pc build on hold to put ALL their attention on the 360 build. i still see this hitting in late 09 or early 2010. Epic would leave their pc fanbase hangn like that

The first one didn't do well on PC so it makes sense. I loved the PC version but there was never anyone to play with. Besides Unreal does amazing on PC and didn't do so well on 360. They are sticking to what works...makes sense from a business standpoint.

BTW, I played Horde for Gears 2 this weekend! BAD ASS!!!
