As most of you already know, the PS3's latest firmware update 2.40 ended up crashing many machines and forced the users to do a complete hard drive wipe. Unfortunately, at first these reports were ignored and almost laughed at, and Sony did not pull the newest update before many more unlucky PS3 owners lost everything they had saved and downloaded.

A PR guy from Sony was quoted saying that at that time they were, "looking into it right now and will work with those customers [to] directly address any issues they may be experiencing." Which translated into, "send us your system that we broke and we will fix it for you for $150.00". One of the features of the new update was to incorporate the Trophies which were to act much like Xbox Lives Achievements.

Finally, the update was pulled and it has not been announced when the new fixed update will be available again. Kinda makes one nervous to even download and install the re-release when it comes out, doesn't it?

Anyways, just wanted to see if any of our readers here had this effect them? My friend's Xbox 360 was one of the ones that crashed when the 360 had this similar issue. Did any of you guys have to wipe your hard drive? Did any of you get the update to work? If so, what do you think about the trophies system, have you gotten any yet?

didn't know that the update bricked consoles...I would be pissed. unfortunately I don't have a ps3.

Wow... I like how you say it crashed most machines... where did you pull that figure from? Mine is working just fine and so are all my friends systems

Mine works fine. Thanks to the few who got theirs "crashed" they removed it so I couldn't do in game messaging(thats why you save your data on a external HDD or flash drive peoples!!). If anything I got mad at that. Theres no In game music yet either because devs haven't put a patch for that yet. Only certain games like Pain and High volicity bowling have it. Theres also only a few games that have trophy unlocks(super stardust, warhawk,pain..etc)Its a working progress and to be honest I expected it to go wrong the first time. Oh well -1 to Sony for that one, but good effort.

Yeah, they pulled the update before I got a chance to download it. Thank god.

Actually after reading the forums and what not its only a few people that have this problem. Most PS3 owners said nothing has really happen, but to the people who do have the problem they say just reformat your HDD and it will work fine(you should back up your hdd regardless)This does not void your warranty at all.

I had no problems when I installed the new firmware, then again I have not played my ps3 since 2 two days ago. Every since this news came out i'm afraid to turn my ps3 on lol. j/k ,I have no time.

You have no way to know how many people are affected just by looking at forums. There are the people who send emails with complaints and those who call and none of that will appear on forums. If they pulled the update, it was because it is more widespread than we think.

As for the no comment policy, that's just how Sony works ever since they got some bad experiences by saying that a given PSP update would come out at a certain date and it actually took them longer. Gamers have no patience it seems and raised hell because they had to wait a couple more days for it.

Besides, no one will die if we have to wait a couple more days or weeks even until they fix whatever was wrong. I'm just glad I was too busy actually playing games to bother to download the update. The consoles without this update still play games as far as I know so it should be fine. Mine does at least. (Yes, there was a bit of sarcasm at the end of this paragraph.)

I got the update and was lucky :), does anybody know if it got pulled off again. Cause its supposed to be on but a friend of mine says that he has not been able to update.

I nor any of my friends have had any problem with the update. It's still up on my ps3 and works fine. Half of my friends have already started getting trophies and they love it. This is actually the first I've heard of a PS3 crash, only lockups.
