Mirror's Edge was announced almost a year ago and has slipped quitely under radar until now! It's powered by Unreal Engine 3, in addition to a new lighting solution developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE). The video of the gameplay shows a clean, brightly coloured, and realistic enviornment. You can do things such as wall-running, climbing up sides of buildings, leaping long distances, and much more. The game trailer of real gameplay footage shows how freely the main character, Faith, moves. When she leaps you can see her arms and legs flailing in the most realistic way.
Faith the main character, is put to the task of rescuing her sister from the government.
A runner, whose parents were killed protesting the government, named Faith has to free her sister from the corrupt government. Being taught not to rely on the current means of communication, partly because it's all monitored by the police and government, she begins running messages to the criminal underworld while attempting to rescue her sister. She only has a mysterious character named Mercury to rely on as she gets pursued by many government agents.
Mirror's Edge goal is to "convey the strain and physical contact with the environment," according to senior producer Owen O'Brien. One of the main focuses of this game is the fluid movements. The way Faith moves is inspired by parkour (an art of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible). Different from DICE's normal productions such as the Battlefield franchise, Mirror's Edge is a completely re-vamped way to look at first-person games.
You can actually find the GameTrailers link to this video, here, or just watch below..
Despite that most first person games are shooters, it's stressed that even though your character can hold weapons, it's an action adventure and not designed as a true shooter. "The focus isn't on the gun, it's on the person." O'brien stresses. Combat in Mirror's edge takes a back seat as you attempt to find the fastest/best route through the games environments. Carrying a weapon will slow Faith down, so the player will have to make decisions when to carry a weapon, and depending on the weapon it might even hinder the way she moves.
Runner Vision!
As I stated above, the games main focus is the character and movement through the enviornment. Mirror's Edge puts to use a system called "Runner Vision", which highlights pieces in the enviornment in red (such as pipes, ramps, and doors), to be used as indicators on where to go next. The longer you play the game, and the closer to the end you get, the amount of indicators will decrease making it up to you, as the player, to figure out where to go.
I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to this game.
